The Coastal Prairie Conservancy works to protect and restore one of North America’s most threatened ecosystems: the Texas coastal prairie. Once spanning more than 9 million acres across Texas and Louisiana, this landscape of tallgrasses, wetlands, and rich agricultural lands has been reduced to less than one percent of its original extent, with another 15 to 20 percent remaining restorable.

As Southeast Texas rapidly grows, farms, fields, and prairies continue to be converted into development, placing added pressure on the region’s remaining open spaces. The Coastal Prairie Conservancy was founded in 1992 to confront this loss and to ensure that the coastal prairie is conserved for people and wildlife before it disappears.

Today, CPC is a nationally accredited, community-supported nonprofit dedicated to building large, interconnected preserve systems across Southeast Texas; restoring prairie, wetland, and working-lands habitats; and engaging the public through education and outreach. The organization has conserved more than 33,600 acres across nine counties, including the Katy Prairie Preserve near Houston — one of the largest protected remnants of this endangered ecosystem.
